A Pastor Stopped a Gay Man From Singing At His Grandmother’s Funeral | Teen Vogue

Teen Vogue has emerged as a strong journalistic voice in events that have unfolded since the presidential election. Journalist Brittney McNamara tracked down this story of a man who was planning to sing “Ave Maria” at his grandmother’s funeral. The pastor of the Indiana Catholic church where the services were being held declined to allow the grandson, Connor Hakes, to sing because, pastor Bob J. Lengerich wrote Hakes:

“Anytime someone sins and then acts in the name of God, it causes scandal. This is the main reason why you cannot (at this time) offer your gifts in service at St. Mary’s. The Catholic Church upholds the dignity of those with same-sex attraction. At the same time, it does not permit same-sex relationships or openly advocating for them because it causes scandal.”

Of course, everyone else who attended or participated in the services, including the pastor himself, was no doubt completely sin free.

The archdiocese of Fort Bend, IN, is apparently working to try to heal the rift Lengerich created with the Hakes family.
